RBB is the public broadcaster for the federal states of Berlin and Brandenburg. It produces and broadcasts one television channel and six radio stations in addition to providing a range of interactive multimedia services including websites, mobile, teletext and HbbTV-based connected TV services. As part of the ARD (Association of Public Service Broadcasting Corporations in Germany), it contributes to several nationwide TV and radio channels and multimedia services. RBB hosts and manages the ARD Play-Out-Center which is responsible for the playout of the ARD Digital programme bouquet via DVB-S/T and the production and editing of SI data for all ARD TV and radio programmes. It has been producing and broadcasting interactive TV applications since August 2002. From its broadcast centres in the capital Berlin and the media city Potsdam-Babelsberg, plus various regional studios and offices RBB provides services for almost six million inhabitants in a transmission area of 30,000 km2. RBB employs approx. 1,500 staff and a large pool of freelancers. RBB has to date successfully completed 30 projects either as consortium leader or partner. It is currently participating in Horizon 2020 project MPAT as well as ICT-PSP-projects Europeana Space, Europeana Sounds and HBB4ALL.
Nicolas Patz
Project Manager
Nicolas Patz was awarded his M.A. in English and History of Art from Freie Universität Berlin. He has more than 16 years of experience in EC funded research projects, specialising in user-friendly interaction concepts. As a researcher at Technical University Berlin he developed concepts for eGovernment and eParticipation, technologies for the Ageing Society, and technology-enhanced and innovative learning. At RBB Nico has focused on concepts based on access and interactivity related to broadcast and hybrid services. In 3D VIVANT Nico developed the interactive HyperVideo concept for the prototype with an interactive children’s programme. He is currently RBB’s project manager in MPAT, a H2020 project focussing on generic concepts and tools for interactive applications on multiple platforms.
